When building a kitchen, our main focus always is the design, cabinets, laminates to be used and the color. One significant but often ignored part of kitchen decor are kitchen tiles. Not expecting that were you?

Kitchen is a room where tiles are especially important because each have their own application and use. It is important to understand the following points before deciding to purchase tiles;

  • Where will the tile be fixed
  • Is the glossy, textured or patterned
  • What material is the tile and which part does it suit
  • Is it easier to maintain and sturdy

For example, floor tiles have to be safe to walk on, while backsplash tiles must be able to withstand heat. Glass tiles are most unsuitable for floors while only sturdy ceramic can withstand high footfall. Below are a few great tips when choosing the right kind of tiles for your kitchen.

1. ASK YOURSELF WHERE THE TILES WILL BE INSTALLED

This important aspect always comes first, because the the type of material that is going to be used is dependent on the usage of that space. Tiles can be placed on the floor, behind the washbasin, on the walls or underside of upper cabinets. Tiles are also sometimes used as countertops.

2. ASK YOURSELF WHAT MATERIAL YOU WILL NEED

Tiles are very resilient and made of different kinds of materials. There’s stone, granite, clay, ceramic, porcelain, marble, and glass. While vinyl, porcelain and clay are used on the floor, ceramic and porcelain are also used on countertops. Glass is used for walls.

3. UNDERSTAND YOUR FAMILY’S LIFESTYLE

Kitchen tiles won’t be changed frequently, and their sturdiness and long life must be considered before buying them. Choosing the right materials is important to keep them intact for longer. Ceramic tiles as countertops can withstand heat and are therefore perfect as countertops. They are also easier to clean. But since they crack or break when dropped, all such tiles don’t suit floors.

4. OBSERVE YOUR FAMILY’S HABITS

Kitchen traffic is important to consider when selecting tiles. Tiles have to be strong and durable enough to take the weight of people, animals, furniture and appliances daily. Wall tiles don’t suit floors because they are too slippery. Instead floor tiles must be textured or patterned for better grip.

5. KNOW YOUR BUDGET BEFORE MAKING THE DECISION

Kitchen tiles are generally inexpensive, but some like marble and custom designed ceramic tiles are costly. They are also meant to last for several years and it is therefore important to work out the budget before making purchases. A home decorator or designer will give you an approximate cost.
