Planning to invest in a modular kitchen? How you use the workspaces in your kitchen is the most important aspect when planning the kitchen layout. Plot the natural work path between the most frequently used areas in any kitchen and play around with what best suits your home.

Before you decide, make some time for research – find out what sort of design would suit you and your space best. The smaller the work triangle, the more efficient a workspace, because you don’t need to be all over the entire kitchen area when you are cooking.

Which Layout Suits You?

The six most common modular kitchen layouts are the L-Shaped, Straight Line, U-Shaped, Parallel or Galley, Island and Peninsula – each of these has it’s own advantages and plays with various aspects of the work triangle. Keeping in mind the floor plan of your kitchen – including walls, doors and utilities – you can use the kitchen work triangle for each of these six layouts to figure out which would suit you best.

1. L SHAPED LAYOUT

This is one of the most commonly applied kitchen layouts and is ideal for smaller homes. It makes efficient use of minimum floor space and gives you the advantage of easily incorporating a small dining table within your kitchen.

2. STRAIGHT LAYOUT

Unlike the other layouts, this type of kitchen does not employ a work triangle, as the workflow is based on a straight line. This makes it ideal for studio and loft apartments; keeping your kitchen space to a minimum while still maintaining optimum efficiency.

The Straight Modular Kitchen layout is compact, unobtrusive, versatile and works for both small and large kitchen spaces.

3. U SHAPED LAYOUT

If your home has a large kitchen space or you are fond of cooking, the U-shaped kitchen layout is likely to suit you best. This layout has the most efficient work triangle and provides the most storage space as well, with plenty of wall and floor cabinets and more counter space too. This also makes it ideal for family homes.

U-shaped modular kitchen layout

The U Shaped Modular Kitchen fits into longer spaces, affords much storage and countertop space and is very versatile.

4. PARALLEL or GALLEY LAYOUT

When it comes to cooking, the parallel kitchen is quite possibly the most efficient layout. With two, long working areas that face each other, it can be split into ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ work spaces. It provides plenty of counter space for appliances and maximizes storage as well. The parallel kitchen is suitable for most types of homes and is easily adaptable to your needs.

Parallel modular kitchen layout

The Parallel Modular Kitchen is apt for longer rooms, lines two opposing walls, affords plenty of room for movement and provides ample storage.

5. ISLAND LAYOUT

An island kitchen is often the kitchen of choice in homes around the world. It combines either a straight line or L-shaped kitchen model with an unconnected island space. This space can be used as an extra counter area/breakfast bar or installed with a sink or stovetop. With its advantage of two opposing working and storage spaces, this kitchen is an ideal layout for open plan living. It is also great for entertaining.

6. G SHAPED or PENINSULA LAYOUT

Similar to an island kitchen, a peninsula kitchen layout has a free standing workspace that provides a secondary counter, work or entertainment area. Unlike an island, this peninsula is connected to the main workspace; making it accessible from three, rather than four sides. Often considered the ideal layout for homes with small kitchen areas, the peninsula provides all the advantages of an island worktop while utilizing less floor space.

Peninsula modular kitchens have well-defined boundaries, separate the cooking space, double up as dining spaces and offer plenty of storage.
